  • Food Inc. Review

In 2009, Americans were cleaning out their cupboards and rewriting grocery lists. The documentary, “Food Inc” had been released and all that witnessed it were awed by the harsh reality of our nations food industry.  The director, Robert Kenner, dug deep into the core of these large corporations to expose the processes in which food is made and why these offensive methods and formulas were being used….and protected.

Government agencies, such as the FDA and USDA, were shown to have been neglecting their duties and failing to keep the public safe. For example, a court decision found that cloned meat should not require labeling. They have been exposed as protectors of large corporations instead of U.S. citizens. The movie elegantly weaves a story of how and why these industries prevail, and why when we go to the local Wal-Mart and purchase a bottle of 5% juice with high fructose corn syrup, we let them. It is shocking to learn that 80% of supermarket foods are rearrangements of corn (even beef, as cattle have been trained to consume the cheap substitute of it’s natural food source, grass) or that marketing has been using different illustrations of the same scene, rural landscape kept intact by the reliable American farmer, when in reality large corporations have nearly eliminated the need for the traditional farmer through the use of large scale productions and genetically engineered foods.

The research into the manufacturing processes of food products is astonishing. What’s more alarming is the illusion of choice, not only through the produce aisle, but also through our ability to obtain the food we desire. As a result of using cheap labor, processes, and ingredients, they are manufacturing products that the majority of people can afford while only the wealthier citizens are able to manage eating a pricier organic diet.  A part of why change comes so slowly is because corporations fall in line to the demands of its consumer, but while their cheap products are still on the shelf the average consumer will have a difficult time shelling out for the goods that will create this change.

The director makes a point to introduce the truth that we do have the power to demand clean, organic foods, that when we chose a food we are voting for “local or not, organic or not”  The impact the film has had has been astounding; people are asking questions and choosing more wholesome products. The choices the average consumer has made recently, even just the small purchase of organic canned soup over the more common brands, has contributed to the increase of organic and natural foods in our supermarkets. The takeaway message is that we, the public have the power over their businesses; we don’t have to stand up in court to vote yes to a more honest food industry.

  • Pastry Bags!

I've been baking a lot (that is until my oven caught on fire a week ago!) and I've finally started to use pastry bags. Let me tell you one thing, they look much easier to use then they actually are. After making both batter and frosting from scratch (and without electrical devices until the very last time.) my arms are tired and I just about pass out when It comes to decorating and cleaning time. I'm loving being able to do more with the bags though! I just need more practice!!!!

^ The first time using a pastry bag. I used too small of a tip and was making gaps in the design, they were a failed first try. (Vanilla with buttercream and peanut butter frosting.)

^My second time using a pastry bag. I'm not where I want to be just yet (I really need to learn how to not go over filling the tins 3/4 and making them more uniform) but I'd say I improved much since my first time. These were my yummiest batch yet, with a recipe similar to Magnolias Bakery vanilla cupcake and delicious buttercream with blueberries. yum yum yum!

I can't wait until my new oven arrives this week, I will be using the 2D Wilton tip on the next batch!

  • Revolutionize Your Social Network With About.Me!

I'm a bzzagent, so I try new products and give my opinion on them. My most recent product is actually a website, About.Me.

HOLY COW! How is this just being introduced!? (I promise I'm not being over-enthusiastic)

This website links all of your social networking, business, or really any website that is relevant to you all in one introductory place.

The about.me website is a customizable profile. I customized mine to feature two of my photographs to illustrate my passion for photography but you can pick whatever you like. Maybe you're a business owner who wants to network, in this case you can have a picture of your business logo or a stay at home mom or dad that wants to stay in touch with friends could have a picture of his or her family. Really, anything that represents you and what you're there for.

They give you a box (which is also customizable) to type in a little bit about yourself and the links that you decide to put up are also featured in this box.

They have small icons for the more popular websites like facebook and twitter, and for the uncommon websites they have the icon that is in the website bar and text to link you to that website.

So far I haven't seen any limit to the amount of websites you can add and It's a very convenient website to have.

Instead of telling someone here is my twitter, my facebook name is ______, and my xanga username is _______, you can just say "My about.me is about.me/myusername, you'll find all of my websites there" and you are done!

They also offer free business cards (although you have to pay S&H), an about.me email, and profile statistics (which includes profile views, clicks on your provided links, average time spent on profile and much more!)

    I love it!

    Here is mine:

    about.me/laurgray

So what do you think of this website? Are you going to make an about.me profile? Do you have one already?
